The Diamond Valley Scout Group

Welcome to our group, the Diamond Valley Scout Group, our group is part of the Banyule district, in the Yarra Valley Region within the Victorian Branch of the Scout Association of Australia.

Scouting is the largest youth organisation in the world today with some 17 million members in over 150 countries worldwide.

Australian membership is currently 120,000 of which Victorian membership is over one third.

All Scouts regardless of colour, race or religion, have the same promise and ideals as originally inspired by Lord Baden-Powell of Gilwell, founder of Scouting in 1907.

The Aim of the Scout Association of Australia is to encourage the physical, mental, social and spiritual development of young people so that they may take a constructive place in society as responsible citizens.

Scouting Aims

The principle methods used by the Scout Association to achieve its aims are:

• Voluntary membership of a uniformed group which, guided by adults, is increasingly self governing in its successive age groups.
• Commitment to a code for living as expressed in the promise and law, the meaning of which is expanded as the member grows towards maturity.
• The provision of a wide range of attractive constructive and challenging activities including opportunities for adventure and exploration both indoors and outdoors.
• The provision of opportunities for leadership and responsibility.
• Learning by doing.
• Encouragement of activities in smaller groups.
• An award scheme which encourages participation in the full range of activities and provides recognition of individual achievements.

Leaders

There are many opportunities for Leaders within the Scouting movement, you may become a leader of a Mob, Pack, Troop or Unit which involves varying degrees of program planning and weekly meetings.

You may have a certain interest in adventurous activities such as abseiling or water activities and become a leader at an activity centre.

As you progress through Scouting you can also become involved in training and the leadship of adults.

Leaders of Joey Mobs, Cub Packs, Scout Troops and Venturer Units need to allocate one night a week for the group meeting during school term time.

You may also need to attend group hikes or camping trips on one or two weekends a year, or during school holidays.

As a leader you will be given training and support by other leaders from Scouts Australia, and be given resources and program ideas. You will be trained in all aspects of Youth Leadership, Program Planning, Safety and other requirements, before you are permitted to work with young people you will have to under go interviews, reference checks and obtain a Working with Children Card.

Our History - Diamond Valley Scout Group

The Diamond Valley Scout Group was originally registered as the ‘Watsonia Scout Group’ in the late 1990’s, prior to this it was named the 3rd Greensborough Scout Group.

The name was changed to the Diamond Valley Scout Group in 1997 to align it with the name of the local council at that time, the ‘Shire of Diamond Valley’.

The name changing was very important and in some ways sad for the group because it meant the changing from a local suburb where the group was located to the more prominent local council name.

However the Diamond Valley Scout Group all these years has still been recognised as the Watsonia Scout Group, even within the venturer unit because we are indeed located in Watsonia. All Scout groups in Banyule District are simply named after the suburb where they are located, or nearest located such as 1st/2nd Greensborough, 1st Ivanhoe, Bundoora, Eaglemont etc... except our Group.
